Irises belong to the iris family (Iridaceae) and are perennial plants distinguished by their spectacularly beautiful flowers. Their leaves are linear, up to 70 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide, with a light green color. They produce 3-5 large and impressive flowers that emerge at the top of a tall stem. The flowers are slightly blue to violet in color and consist of six similar sepals, arranged three on each side. The outer sepals are bent downward and are equipped with small yellow hairs along the midrib, while the three inner ones are bent downward. It is still used today as a cut flower because of its beautiful blossoms and their wonderful fragrance.

It blooms at the end of April and its flowers adorned the Epitaphios as well as the icon of Saint George, who was celebrated during that period.
