Iris Hollandica Symphony

Irises belong to the Iridaceae family and are perennial plants distinguished by their spectacularly beautiful flowers. Their leaves are linear, up to 70 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide, with a light green color. They usually produce 3-5 large and impressive flowers, which appear at the top of a tall stem, with a color slightly blue toward violet. The flowers consist of six similar sepals, three by three, with the outer ones turned downward and equipped along the midline with small yellow hairs. They are still used today in flower arrangements, due to their beauty and wonderful fragrance. They bloom in late April and often decorated the Epitaphios as well as the icon of Saint George, who is celebrated during that period.
