Book Summary: Pomegranate cultivation is one of the most profitable agricultural activities in India. It is cultivated on a large scale in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The total global production of pomegranates is 10 lakh tonnes. India produces 5 lakh tonnes but exports only 75,000 tonnes. Pomegranate farmers are advised to induce Hasta Bahar flowering by pruning in August and harvest in March in order to prevent bacterial blight (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae). This book covers all aspects, including soil, water, climate, propagation, varieties, orchard establishment, pruning, pests and diseases, nutrition, processed products, wine production, and more.
About the Author: Dr. M.K. Sheikh completed his B.Sc. (Agri) at UAS, Bangalore, an M.Sc. (Agri) in Horticulture and a Ph.D. in Horticulture at UAS, Dharwad. He has worked as a team leader in oilseed research and has achieved several research breakthroughs. He has also developed technology for export-oriented pomegranate production and contributed to the preparation of five laboratory manuals and to writing books in Kannada on grapes, pomegranates and papaya. He is currently a professor and Head of the Department of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture, Bijapur (Karnataka). Dr. M.K. Sheikh also has the distinction of having served the Ministry of Commerce, Saudi Arabia, for two years.
