A journey into the essential nature of the familiar space through the work of John Pawson and his inspirations.
John Pawson: The Minimal Home, the latest volume documenting the distinguished career of John Pawson from Phaidon, focuses on the minimalist master's approach to designing modern homes. Highlighting the details that define his distinctive architectural and aesthetic style, the book explores the fundamental nature of the familiar space through his work and inspirations.
While Minimum, first published by Phaidon in 1996, explored the idea of simplicity in architecture, art, and design across various historical and cultural contexts, John Pawson: The Minimal Home investigates the many ways architecture and design can help us shape how we live in our homes.
The book is organized into six chapters, reflecting how a modern home is used: living room, cooking, dining, bathroom, sleeping, and work. Each section is illustrated with examples of Pawson's work from the 1980s to the present, as well as images of historic precedents, inspirations, and his experiences. From bathing in hot springs in Japan to staying at Donald Judd's home in Marfa, Texas, the Abbey of Le Thoronet in Provence, and Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House outside Chicago.
Deyan Sudjic, Emeritus Director of the Design Museum in London, provides a thoughtful commentary on the domestic interior and reflects on John’s responses to historical precedents, while John discusses his design approach in six accompanying texts.
Filled with stylish photographs, John Pawson: The Minimal Home showcases the architect-designer's goal to create spaces that are comfortable to use, both visually and physically—a goal that gives his work lasting significance.
