Threonine is an essential amino acid, a precursor of two semi-essential amino acids, glycine and serine, and a component of many important proteins, including collagen and myosin. Collagen is found mainly in connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments, but it is also important for the structure of bones and cartilage.
Threonine plays an important role in the synthesis of myosin and is essential for the production of the mucus layer. A threonine deficiency is associated with reduced permeability between intestinal cells and is linked to fewer goblet cells and mucus production.
This amino acid also acts as a glue for small cracks in the walls of blood vessels. As a lipotropic agent, threonine controls the accumulation of fat in the liver. It is used as adjunctive therapy for ulcers of the digestive tract and may support the treatment of anemia and cardiovascular diseases.
