Description & Specifications

The profound influence of African and Afro-diasporic philosophy on Western thought has historically been denied and rejected. As an act of political and ideological resistance, Black Thought Matters traces the early production of philosophical thought on the African continent, disrupting the hegemonic Eurocentric narrative of the Enlightenment as the triumph of human reason and intellect over blind religiosity. Across historical periods—antiquity, the Enlightenment, the age of empire, and the modern world—LaRose T. Parris reveals the persistent erasure, whitening, and distortion of Black thought. To rewrite this narrative, she draws on sources ranging from Antef to Ibn Rushd, and from Anna Julia Cooper to Frantz Fanon, as well as contemporary African philosophers, to construct a powerful counterargument that places Black thought at the center, rather than the margins, of human knowledge. Affirming the centrality of African philosophy to the origins and development of global philosophical and political thought, this book also recognizes cross-border liberation efforts that challenge the dehumanization, criminalization, and extermination of Black people through state violence and police killings. Affirming the importance of Black thought also declares a commitment to the significance of African thinkers, whose work has laid the foundations for the moral and political mission of Black Lives Matter: to emphasize the inherent value of Black life and the struggle to advance a radical equality in which all lives are truly equal.
