Chile under Pinochet’s long dictatorship was a dramatic precursor to the neoliberal crusade, marked by the violent transformation of industrial relations, policymaking by unelected interest groups, and the instrumentalization of state institutions as guarantors of services for big business and, at times, as its rescuers.
It was also a pioneer in the financialization of the economy, the privatization of public assets, the commodification of social services, and the complete deregulation of labor relations.
