Description & Specifications

When and why did the international community begin addressing the phenomenon of climate change?

How have international regulations on this issue taken shape and evolved?

Who is involved in managing it, and in what ways?

How does the climate change regime affect (or not affect) other areas of international law, and how is it affected by them?

Ultimately, what role do international law and diplomacy play in developing solutions to manage climate change?

These are some of the questions this book seeks to answer. Its central focus is a critical examination of the international system for addressing the planet’s greatest threat. Among other things, it explores how this system interacts with other areas of international law relating to the environment, human rights, migration, trade and investment. It analyses and comments on the role and limitations of international law in managing climate change, and highlights how international regulations take shape and evolve through the mechanisms of international diplomacy. Its central argument is that the lack of meaningful progress is due less to the absence of international regulations than to the treatment of climate change as a purely environmental problem and the lack of a shared understanding of how to prevent and address its risks.

This book is intended not only for the academic community, but also for anyone wishing to learn about and understand the role of international law and diplomacy in addressing climate disruption.
