Eighty years after the Nuremberg Trials, which sent the masterminds of Nazi crimes to the gallows or to prison and laid the foundations of postwar international law, journalist Stavros Tzimas returns to the German city that left its mark on him in his teens, when he lived there as the child of Greek immigrants. Drawing on a special feature he prepared for the newspaper Kathimerini, he seeks out testimony and material to tell the story of the “Mecca of National Socialism”—then and now. On a journey from Courtroom 600, where the trial took place, to the stadium where thousands of fanatical supporters chanted “one people, one leader,” and the sites of Nazi rallies, as well as through contemporary political currents and the ways the past is remembered, the author uses reporting, conversations, and research to explore what traces those dark days have left on the city. At a time when the far right is once again on the rise in Germany, The Nuremberg Legacy follows in the footsteps of the trial that changed the world, sharing with readers an unsettling perspective on the present.
