A young man makes three journeys at different stages of his life. On each journey, he is called upon to play a different role: in Greece, that of the Companion; in Africa, that of the Lover; and in India, that of the Protector. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters who accompany him down unfamiliar paths: toward desire, compassion, and even redemption. Each encounter draws him ever farther away, into vast, disorienting places, causing him to lose his bearings even more and calling into question everything he knows or wants.
Straddling personal experience and fictional narrative, In a Strange Room is a quest for an identity that remains incomplete, and for desire, which is always on the other side. By the author of The Promise, winner of the 2021 Booker Prize, this intensely existential novel explores the lifelong wandering through the desert that lies between the familiar and the static on one side, and the thrilling unknown on the other.
