Onion bulbs produce ornamental flowers in spherical heads, with dark purple, star-shaped florets. Their colours change from green to reddish or pink-purple as they develop in summer.

The plants grow up to 60 cm tall and prefer a sunny position. The flowers are also suitable for cutting, while the dried flower heads last for a long time indoors.
