Glauber's Salt
Sodium Sulfate
Special Dietary Supplement, 100 g powder
Sodium sulfate (Glauber's salt) supports the normal function of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Laxative effect
- Detoxifying effect
- Antidote for heavy metals
Glauber's salt is a mildly salty substance with laxative properties. Its action is mainly due to a reflex effect on intestinal peristalsis, which helps accelerate the evacuation of intestinal contents. According to its mechanism of action, Glauber's salt liquefies and increases the volume of intestinal contents. Sodium sulfate dissolves well in water and is taken orally not only as a laxative but also as a choleretic and detoxifying agent. It is often used as an antidote for poisoning by metal salts (especially copper, barium, mercury, lead, etc.).
Sodium sulfate is hardly absorbed in the intestine and prevents water absorption. The sulfate ion reacts with various cations, forming non-absorbable compounds. This explains the substance's effectiveness in poisoning by heavy metal salts and excess copper, as well as in reducing calcium levels in the intestine. In small doses, by stimulating receptors in the stomach and intestinal mucosa, it increases secretion, peristalsis, and motility, and may slightly increase appetite. In general, it improves digestion. By liquefying mucus, it has an anticatarrhal effect.
Sodium sulfate is considered the most effective and safest laxative, with its effect extending throughout the large intestine. By stimulating bile production and biliary tract peristalsis, Glauber's salt accelerates the elimination of metabolic waste products and toxins in the bile.
For external use, hypertonic sodium sulfate solutions draw fluid from the tissues, increasing lymphatic flow. Toxins, bacteria, and sloughed epithelial cells are removed along with the lymph and wound exudate. Wounds are cleansed and heal quickly.
Glauber's salt, or sodium sulfate decahydrate (mirabilite), was first discovered in mineral waters by the German chemist Johann Rudolf Glauber and was later synthesized by the action of sulfuric acid on sodium chloride. It consists of transparent, odorless crystals with a bitter-salty taste and good solubility in water. The product may harden during storage.
Sodium sulfate has a wide range of applications in various industries: in the production of soda, sodium thiosulfate, ultramarine pigment, as well as in the glass, refrigeration, veterinary, and human pharmaceutical industries.
