When using stairs with a handrail, hold the rail and use the crutch in the other hand. If there is no handrail, place the crutch on the side of the weaker leg. On stairs, lead with the stronger leg when going up and the weaker leg when going down. The crutch should be adjusted so that the handle is level with your wrist when standing upright with your arms relaxed at your sides.
