On the occasion of the major retrospective exhibition “Alekos Levidis. Painting 1961–2026: A Lifelong Game,” which opened on Thursday, October 7, 2026, at the Benaki Museum / Pireos 138, Agra Publications, in collaboration with the Academy of Athens, is publishing a monumental volume of the same title. Available in Greek and English, this book vividly captures the rich creative journey spanning more than six decades of the distinguished painter and academician.
The volume serves as both a comprehensive guide and an independent visual record, conveying the breadth and diversity of Alekos Levidis’s work. Its pages feature more than 500 works spanning his career from his early years to the present: paintings and drawings, art notebooks and painted book-cover designs that reveal his deep connection with literature, as well as murals, installations, and stage sets that showcase his rich work in scenography.
As the artist himself notes, painting has always been a “lifelong game” for him: an inward process that, like children’s play, calls for focus, creative imagination, and perseverance, while also offering a profound and fruitful pleasure. This creative journey unfolds through the book like an open map, where personal experience meets history, memory, and fiction.
