Description & Specifications

Published by Radamanthys Publications, the new book by Adamos A. Mouzouris is an offering of memory and historical reflection, rooted in Cyprus, the experience of 1974, and the enduring duty of the living toward the dead. Some dead never truly departed. They remained unburied. They were denied justice. Those who loved them still search for them, speak to them, and wait for them.

For Adamos A. Mouzouris, memory returns ceaselessly to the bitter summer of 1974, to his beloved childhood friends, companions and fellow soldiers who set out together at sunrise on 20 July and never came back. From this personal debt emerge Fragments of History: an expansive journey through time, where personal testimony meets History and ancient Greek literature engages in dialogue with more recent historical experience.

Homer and Thucydides, Antigone and The Suppliants, Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis, the Revolution of 1821, the modern history of Cyprus, the EOKA struggle and the Turkish invasion of 1974 form fragments of a narrative that continually returns to fundamental questions: What do we owe to memory? What do the living owe the dead? How does personal experience become historical consciousness?

At its heart is the Sacred and Holy Burial. From the unwritten law of ancient Greek tradition to Cyprus’s missing persons and unburied dead, burial emerges as a fundamental human duty, bound up with dignity, memory, mourning and the pursuit of justice. In the book’s pages, historical sources, ancient texts, poetry, folk songs and personal recollections coexist with the voices of a distinctive circle of companions.

Oneirios, Nestorios, Dystropios and the other characters converse, disagree, remember and search the past for meaning in the present. And behind the battles, victories and defeats, behind the great events of History.
