With stunning illustrations, readers will race through time, uncovering the fascinating science and rich history that form the extraordinary story of the horse. There are countless chapters in the Book of Equus. It is a tale deep and ancient.
Join Palomino, a curious young horse, on a journey through time to meet his prehistoric ancestors—from the tiny Eohippus to the swift Merychippus and wild Equus ferus. As he witnesses millions of years of evolution, Palomino also discovers the powerful bond between horses and humans—a relationship that has shaped civilisations and endured both beauty and hardship.
Grahame Baker-Smith's exquisite artwork beautifully blends an emotive story about the life of one horse with how the whole species came to exist, moving seamlessly between the personal and the epic. These powerful themes weave together to create a dazzling tale of self-discovery and a rallying cry for young horse-lovers and fans of books such as Black Beauty and The Fossil Hunter.
Enriched by the guidance of Dr Yvette Running Horse Collin and her groundbreaking research alongside her deep cultural insight, Dawn Horse honours both scientific discovery and Indigenous knowledge. It depicts the horse's story not only as one of evolution and survival, but also as one of profound connection. These amazing creatures have shaped landscapes, cultures and human history for millennia. Through this lens, Palomino's adventure becomes more than a tale of transformation; it is a celebration of resilience, partnership and the enduring spirit of the horse.
