Description & Specifications

The collective volume Antisemitism in Greece: New and Contemporary Readings from the 19th Century to the Present is a multidisciplinary, polyphonic intervention in one of the most pressing and historically burdened fields of public debate. With the clear aim of moving beyond the circumstances that took shape after October 7, 2023, the volume examines antisemitism as a long-standing phenomenon that is constantly changing, survives in different ideological environments, and permeates public discourse, institutions, and everyday experience.

Drawing on contributions from historians, social scientists, legal scholars, journalists, and members of the Jewish community, the work combines scholarly analysis with personal testimony, seeking to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and the experience of trauma. It explores the historical roots and contemporary forms of antisemitism, from its ideological transformations and its relationship with anti-Zionism to its normalization in parts of public and cultural discourse.

At the same time, the volume highlights the lived and social dimensions of the phenomenon, shedding light on its impact on education, culture, the public sphere, and everyday life. Particular emphasis is placed on how the memory of the Shoah, contemporary political conflicts, and mechanisms of public representation shape the perception and reproduction of anti-Jewish stereotypes.

As a whole, the volume seeks to contribute to the systematic study of a field that remains ideologically and academically contentious, while also highlighting the tensions arising from the intersection of historical research, public discourse, and the political climate.
