Anxiety dominates the alternating plots of the novel. Inspector Montalbano feels an undefined fear. The memory of a dream causes him discomfort, superstitions, dark premonitions.
A side thought tries to take a clear form and continues to exist in reality as a suspicious complicity; it has its origin in the coincidences with the wretched dream that transformed a piece of barren, deserted land into an open morgue with a closed coffin and a corpse waiting to be identified, under a yellow light and psychosomatic effects.
Even the usual nonsensical ramblings of Catarella are expressed in the dream through phrases in Latin. In the course of the investigation, aimed at clarifying cases of armed assault and rape, arms smuggling, and scammers exporting stolen artworks, he encounters and gets entangled with women who have fiery temperaments, while the inspector, exposed to the dark side of things and the illegal games of the mind, is in a state of waiting.
Eventually, something that is not completely clear will emerge from the background and be revealed.
