The play, "Vera or The Nihilists", is a political drama, a melodramatic tragedy set in Russia and based on the story of Vera Zasulich, who in 1878 assassinated the chief of police in Saint Petersburg as a member of the organization The Nihilists, which sought to assassinate Tsar Alexander II and overthrow the tyrannical regime.
The play was written in 1880 but was not performed in England, despite efforts made. During his stay in America, Wilde adapted it, after the assassination of the Tsar by this organization in 1891.
