For two main reasons we wrote the "Dictionary of Ancient Greek Verbs, from the past to the present":
- We wanted to demonstrate in our own way the continuity of the Greek language over time, even with its variations and changes. For this reason, a section of each verb we discuss is dedicated to words, phrases, and even proverbs-quotations that still exist today, albeit sometimes with altered meanings. To further support our view that Ancient Greek is not "dead" and that students should not treat it as a foreign language, but rather can easily make it their own with their linguistic senses, we searched and found for each verb an excerpt from modern Greek poetry or literature that includes this verb or a related word. Thus, the student can use this section of the Dictionary for other language lessons, but also consider it as a stimulus to come into contact - optionally and pleasantly - with the new Greek poets. The poetic excerpts have references (the name of the poet and the title of the poem), as well as detailed bibliography at the back of the book. We kept all the peculiarities of our poets' language, only using monotonic.
- However, because we believe that language learning and broad knowledge also come through "pure" knowledge, for this reason, for each verb we present its etymology and its theme or themes, its constructions and meanings, some syntactic notes (for a clearer understanding of syntax, we refer to "The Practical Syntax of Ancient Greek" by Kalliopi Veva, published by Grigori), and some "special" phrases formed by the verb, using in many cases excerpts (with their translation) from ancient Greek prose writers and poets, which include these phrases. We continue with the verb's initial tenses and grammatical notes on it (for a better understanding of grammar, we refer to "The Grammar of Ancient Greek" and "Exercises in Grammar of Ancient Greek" by Kalliopi Veva - Theodosia Theohari, published by Grigori), with the verb's compounds and their meanings, with synonyms and antonyms, in many of which we provide horizontally the initial tenses, their meanings, their etymology, words or phrases in Modern Greek. Additionally, we present words in Ancient Greek (with their meaning) that are related to the verb under examination. Finally, where we deem it necessary, we provide conjugation tables and make references to Greek mythology, science, or tradition. Thus, we hope that our Dictionary will be a significant aid in the hands of anyone dealing with the Greek language, but also a pleasant handbook for every reader, as it will keep them company not only with the words-phrases and proverbs they will find or the poetic excerpts, but also with the notes from Greek mythology or folk tradition.
All of this, of course, we were able to implement in the Dictionary of Verbs with the substantial support of the directors and colleagues of the "Education Theoretical" tutoring center (www.ekpedefsitheoritiko.gr) and we warmly thank them.
