Emancipation begins when we challenge the opposition between seeing and acting, when we understand that the obvious facts that structure the relationships between speech, observation, and action belong to the structure of domination and subordination. It begins when we understand that seeing is also an action that confirms or transforms the distribution of positions. The viewer acts, just like the student or the scientist. They observe, choose, compare, interpret. They connect what they see with many other things they have seen in other scenes, in other places. They compose their own poem with the elements of the poem in front of them. They participate in the performance by reshaping it in their own way, as they sideline, for example, the vital energy that the performance wants to transmit in order to make it a pure image and connect this pure image with a story they read or dreamed of, lived or invented. They are thus simultaneously a distant viewer and an active interpreter of the spectacle presented to them.
