EXCERPT We both glanced at the clock. Our time had run out a few minutes ago. Slowly, Charles gathered his things. "I'm exhausted," he whispered. "You must be tired too." I straightened up and squared my shoulders. "Not at all. In fact, a deep and meaningful session like today's energizes me. You did a lot of good work today, Charles. We worked well."

Description & Specifications

EXCERPT We both glanced at the clock. Our time had run out a few minutes ago. Slowly, Charles gathered his things. "I'm exhausted," he whispered. "You must be tired too." I straightened up and squared my shoulders. "Not at all. In fact, a deep and meaningful session like today's energizes me. You did a lot of good work today, Charles. We worked well."

I opened the office door for him, and as always we shook hands as he was leaving. I closed the door and suddenly slapped my forehead and said, "No, I can't do this. I can't end the session this way." I reopened the door, called him back and said, "Charles, I don't know what came over me, I reverted to an old habit and did something I no longer want to happen. The truth is I was indeed tired from diving into deep and difficult subjects; in fact, I'm a bit wiped out, and I'm glad I don't have to see anyone else today." I looked at him and waited. I didn't know how he would react. "I figured as much, Irv. I know you better than you think. I can tell when you're just trying to act like a psychotherapist."

“With The Killjoy of Love, Yalom inaugurated a new literary genre: narratives from the realm of psychotherapy combined with a passion for classic literature and the depth of essayistic discourse. All of us who have learned so much from Yalom about human nature and experience have reason to celebrate the publication of his new book, Creatures of a Day." —STEVEN PINKER, Harvard University

“Irvin D. Yalom has written a book so penetrating that upon entering its world, you are transformed. You feel that the book is reading you rather than you reading it. Creatures of a Day is one of the few books that can achieve such a feat.” — REBECCA NEWBERGER GOLDSTEIN, author

“I am a great admirer of Irvin D. Yalom’s literary and scientific work. In Creatures of a Day, he combines the deep knowledge of the therapist about pain and joy of life with the acuity of the man of letters who knows how to shape the narrative moment. His therapeutic stories are filled with truth and invite us to confront more pressing moral and spiritual questions with courage and hope for change. It is a moving and original book.” — JAY PARINI, author

WE ARE ALL CREATURES OF A DAY. With these words, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius reminds himself of the ephemeral nature of life. From him, the 84-year-old Irvin Yalom draws the title of his new book with therapeutic stories and invites us to share with him the struggles, pain, and magic of life and psychotherapy. The wisdom of the elderly therapist is evident in the immediacy with which he approaches the person who comes to his office, in his incisive comments, and in his willingness to share his personal anxieties if it can help the patient.

As the cycle of his life comes to a close, Yalom’s receptivity increases. With humility and honesty, he admits that he continues to be surprised, to learn from his patients, and to marvel at their ability to harness the healing components of the therapeutic encounter in their own unique ways.

In these pages, we will meet a nurse, angry and resigned to misery, with no way out, who lost her son to the world of drugs and crime, yet must comfort her privileged patients in their own pain; a successful entrepreneur who, in the aftermath of a suicide, feels desperate in front of the gaps and secrets that poison every relationship; a newcomer therapist whose study of the human condition erodes her memories of a lost friendship; and a man whose denial of philosophy forces even Yalom to doubt his confidence in it. These people and their stories will linger in our minds long after we read the last page of his book.

Like The Killjoy of Love and his other writings, Creatures of a Day provides an insightful, compassionate, and simultaneously brave perspective on the human soul, with the pain, confusion, and hope that binds it. With this book, Yalom offers the essence of his thought and experience, with humor, mastery, and profound humanity.

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS IRVIN D. YALOM (born 1931) is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the USA. A student and collaborator of Rollo May, he is considered one of the most important living representatives of the existential school in psychiatry and is the author of the most authoritative and comprehensive manual of existential psychotherapy (Existential Psychotherapy). In the scientific field, he is particularly known for his clinical and research work in group psychotherapy. His first book, Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, was published in a new revised and expanded edition in 2006 and has been translated into 17 languages, serving as a foundational textbook in many psychiatric and psychotherapy programs. Yalom has written many other scientific books and articles. His literary work begins later in life and includes two collections of short stories (The Killjoy of Love and The Mother and the Meaning of Life) and four novels (When Nietzsche Wept, The Schopenhauer Cure, and The Spinoza Problem), which have become bestsellers in many countries. All of his literary books are stories of psychotherapy, which he considers an extension of his teaching work, which is, as he says, filled anyway with stories and narratives. His books published by Agra include: When Nietzsche Wept, The Schopenhauer Cure, and The Spinoza Problem (novels); The Killjoy of Love and The Mother and the Meaning of Life (short stories); Religion and Psychiatry, The Gift of Psychotherapy, In the Garden of Epicurus - Leaving Behind the Terror of Death, Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, and Inpatient Group Psychotherapy (essays and studies); Every Day a Little Closer - A Psychotherapy Told Twice (with Ginny Elkin); I Will Call the Police, co-authored with R. L. Berger (narrative), while his book Existential Psychotherapy is in preparation.
