The topics developed in this volume provide a "first approach and inventory of Education in the broader area of Lagkadas during the period 1850-1912." In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, significant educational centers emerged, such as those of Lagkadas, Socho, Berova (Vertiskos), Vysokas (Ossa), Ardameri, Balaftsa (Kolchikos), Leivadia of Halkidiki, and Gouvevnas (Assyrou).
Intense socio-economic peculiarities of each community, as well as historical-political developments, emerge from the analysis of school records. The Church with its representatives, the Greek state through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Philanthropic Educational Societies, as well as educators and representatives of local communities, placed special emphasis on the development of education during this period.
The author is a graduate of the Theological School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a master's and doctoral degree from the History and Dogma Department of the same School. He is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Philosophy and Education of the Faculty of Philosophy, A.U.Th., and has been serving as a Secondary Education Professor since 2008.
