Aion takes massively multiplayer online role-playing games to a new level in terms of graphics. Based on the iconic CryEngine - the 3D engine behind the much-acclaimed game Far Cry, the game has won many awards for its graphics. However, while the beautiful graphics are certainly pleasing, the gameplay is what really matters, with Aion having proven its worth, being a huge success in Korea and China since its release in 2008.
The game is a fantasy RPG set in the two halves of Atreia - a planet torn apart by an ancient catastrophe. The game features all the usual characteristics of MMORPGs but adds some unique or at least unusual elements.
- The first is the inclusion of flight, both as a method of transportation and as a means of combat.
- The second directly concerns combat - in Aion, battles are not only fought between players or between players and computer-controlled environmental characters, but also among all three simultaneously.
In the world of Aion, players choose to be either the elven Elyos or the beastly Asmodians. These two races inhabit each half of the former planet, but their isolation has caused hostility between them. Regardless of the race, players must also choose a class - Warrior, Scout, Mage, or Priest. Warriors are strong and resilient, Scouts are quick and agile. Mages are magical, while Priests can heal and boost morale.
Characters are highly customizable, as one would expect - but the game also features the Stigma system that allows characters to use abilities not typically associated with their class. Both Elyos and Asmodians must fight against the Balaur, a beastly race that seeks the destruction of both races.
Between the broken halves of their former planet lies the Abyss, another dimension where Elyos and Asmodians have the power of flight, and here they fight for the ancient battle of supremacy. Join the ongoing battle for control of the fortresses in the Abyss - every victory will reward you with power and bonuses that you can use to boost your ranking and improve your equipment.
