General Epicondylitis:
Epicondylitis (lateral epicondylalgia) of the elbow is a common condition characterized by pain in the elbow radiating to the forearm and upper arm. Athletes, carpenters, plumbers, painters, chefs, decorators, builders, electricians, hairstylists, musicians, masseurs, and generally people who perform repetitive forearm movements in their daily activities are most often affected. Epicondylitis is inflammation of the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to the outer side of the elbow.
It is usually caused by:
- Fatigue
- Violent strain
- Gradual repetitive strain of the hand in manual labor
- Specific movements (overuse syndrome)
- Acute injuries due to impact
- Gradual injuries
- Excessive tension development in the tendons
- Reinvolvement of the patient in sports activity
- Insufficient or poor warm-up
- Poor recovery from a previous laceration injury
- Incorrect sporting technique
An episode of epicondylitis can last from 6 months to 2 years, while the condition is self-limiting. In 9 out of 10 patients, the symptoms will subside automatically within the first year. However, medical intervention is meaningful with the goal of minimizing them while improving the patient's functionality.
When lateral epicondylitis is in its early stages, the treatment followed is conservative. Specifically, it is recommended to limit the activities that may have caused the condition. Anti-inflammatory medications and cold compresses are prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain. A physical therapy program with stretching and strengthening exercises may help relieve symptoms.
