In the context of global ecological and seismic chaos in the mid-2100s, the United States has been divided in two by the Great Rift. As a result of the melting polar ice, the Mississippi River has devastated the central part of the United States, causing the failure of an inadequately equipped Federal Government and literally splitting the country. These two sides are forced to survive on their own in the subsequent aftermath.

The East, now known as the Atlantic Alliance, symbolizing its union with Europe, relies on the survival of this new world through cybernetics, an established yet evolving technology that is now over 150 years old. On the other side of the flooded continent, the Western states, now called the Pacific Republic, which have allied with Asia, attempt to solve their problems at a genetic level, essentially reconstructing the DNA of their inhabitants - a method that the Atlantic Alliance considers morally unacceptable.
