BURY THE DEAD (1936) IS AN ANTI-WAR WORK that was first performed in New York from 1936 to 1937 by the Actor’s Repertory Company.

Although written during the interwar period, it is not just another play about World War I. Show sets the time of his play "as the second year of the war that is set to begin tomorrow night." Six dead soldiers – who died during an unspecified war – refuse to be buried, expressing their despair.

“I was or I wasn't twenty years old. I had done nothing. I had trained for twenty years to become a man, and then they killed me.” The general takes it upon himself to convince them that it is their duty to be buried – “Wars are fought and won only when the dead are buried and forgotten” – but the soldiers refuse. The next plan is for the women – wives, sisters, mothers – to come and each persuade her beloved to accept his death as a hero and allow himself to be buried, but they are unable to succeed.
