Description & Specifications

1960s, Epirus. Antonis Kokkino's life is marked by a wild storm that erupts on the day of his birth in the middle of a field. Before he feels the touch of his weakened mother, the first drops that fall on his bare, bloodied body bind him to them forever. From that moment, fate turns its back on him. His early years in the village are marked by contempt and problems unbefitting a child. The circumstances force him, at the age of fifteen, to emigrate to America with one goal: to become rich. Soon he realizes that working hard and under terrible conditions will keep his dream of gaining money merely a dream. His acquaintance with a fabulously wealthy but much older woman will thrust him into the good salons of New York. From then on, his life changes. For better or worse? Tony Red no longer has anything in common with his innocent past. Circumstances turn him into a cold man, devoid of emotions, mercy, and love for anyone. The only common point with that pure Greek boy he left behind is one thing: Whenever it rains, he enjoys getting soaked, feeling the touch of the mother he never knew.

Read an excerpt

That first night in America, he dreamed of his mother. He had dreamed of her five or six other times, but she was always a shadow, an impersonal figure. This time he saw her clearly. She was wearing a long blue dress and had her blonde hair braided. She was holding a bunch of white flowers, and her blue eyes looked at him with so much love. How beautiful his mother was! "Know that I love you, my son," she told him and gave him a flower. "Why did you leave me then, mother?" he asked her. "I never left you. I am always by your side, my boy." "I miss you, mother," he said with sorrow. Argyro gave him another flower. "I will always be by your side. Every time it rains, it is because I am touching you," she said and disappeared.
