Description & Specifications

The 2nd volume of the series "Biographies of Greek Composers" Series Director: Alexandros Charkiolakis.

Connected unidimensionally with the melody of the Greek national anthem, Nikolaos Halkiopoulos Mantzaros (1795-1872) remained, for a century and a half due to this "recognizability," an unknown figure in the art music of modern Greece.

However, during his lifetime, he was a significant personality of the Ionian Islands in the 19th century with various creative, educational, social, and musical-aesthetic interests. At the same time, as a member of the local aristocracy, he participated in the management of power during the period of British Protection, always attuning himself to the social demands of his time.

This book attempts, among other things, to map out the social, musical, and family environment of the composer and his recognition outside of Greece. It provides a comprehensive presentation of his musical and educational work, the understanding of his mature musical-aesthetic thought, as well as the revelation of facets of the "everyday" Mantzaros.

Simultaneously, the socio-political conditions of the Ionian Islands during the period are approached from a musical perspective, as well as their reflection in the Greek kingdom.
