The attempt for a smooth transition from Byzantine Hellenism to the modern era, the first Greek "Renaissance," will be crushed under the coordinated pressure of East and West.

Modern Hellenism will live for seven centuries entirely or partially enslaved to the Turkish East or the Frankish-Latin West.

The formation of our nation will thus transform into a creation in bondage: Submission and resistance, oblivion and memory, complicity and rupture, between the elites and the popular body.
