In the autumn of 1943, a small boy decides to escape from the Mishrachi ghetto just as the first trains carrying Jews from Thessaloniki have already left for the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. His escape, and shortly thereafter that of his family, from their hometown will change their fate, as it will not align with that of the approximately 50,000 Jews from the city who were displaced and met their death in the Nazi concentration camps.

Andreas Sefihas, a few months before he passed away in November 2007, decides to unfold the memories of an era that tasted of his mother's plum liqueur, games in the yards, and strolls in “Bechtsinar.” In “Memories of a Life and a World,” alongside his life story, the history of Thessaloniki unfolds from the early 20th century to the present, while a special place in the book is given to his 30-year involvement with the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki and, specifically, his eight-year tenure as president (1993-2001).

The writing, editing, and compilation of the text were done by journalist Sophia Pakalidou. Andreas Sefihas, president of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki from 1993 to 2001, decided to share the memories of his life: images of a cosmopolitan Thessaloniki, the plum liqueur of his Sephardic mother, sounds of wooden carts creaking on the cobblestone streets, strolls through the bustling Modiano market with his grandmother. Historical events and social changes that shaped the city from the end of the 19th century to the present are mentioned alongside the narrative of his ancestors, while his own life is overshadowed by the tragic fate of the thousands of Jews who were removed from Thessaloniki to meet their death in the concentration camps.

Andreas survived the Holocaust, hidden by the Nazis with his family on a farm in Argolis. He grew up in a world of constant change, and his thirty-year involvement with the Jewish Community gave him a visionary direction to work towards restoring the Community to its rightful place, not only in his beloved Thessaloniki but also on the broader canvas of Jewish Communities in the Diaspora.
