Alpha lipoic acid, together with vitamins C and E, constitutes the body's main defense against free radicals. It is considered the ideal antioxidant, as it neutralizes free radicals in both the fatty and aqueous parts of the cell, unlike vitamin C (which is water-soluble) and vitamin E (which is fat-soluble). 

Alpha lipoic acid consists of two different types (isomers), which have very different properties. The "R" form is the biologically active form (natural for the body), which is responsible for its antioxidant properties.

The "S" form is produced by the industry and is not particularly biologically active. Alpha-lipoic acid supplements consist of an "S&R" form in a 50/50 ratio. This means that an alpha-lipoic acid supplement contains 50% active "R" form. The human body normally produces and uses the "R" form of alpha-lipoic acid. The "R" form of alpha-lipoic acid significantly reduces inflammatory reactions and has been proven to be clearly more potent than the combined "R&S" form found in alpha-lipoic acid.
