This book is the result of forty years of research, reflection, writing, and teaching about the National Schism. Its aim is understanding, explanation, interpretation. Not praise, nor denunciation. If the reader gets the impression that the book is biased in favor of Eleftherios Venizelos, this stems from the facts themselves, not from intention.
After presenting the main events from 1909 to 1922, the National Schism is interpreted as a quasi-religious "schism" of charismatic origin, as a crisis in the process of national completion, as a class conflict, but also as a dispute that acquired the dimensions of a civil war. One may disagree with the interpretation. But not with the facts on which it is based.
