In "The Eternal Husband," there is a psychological dimension that appears for the first time in world literature: before Dostoevsky described the character of Pavlovich, there was an empty space in the gallery of psychological types. This is because French literature confined betrayed husbands to the dimension of tragedy and farce. All marital accidents were presented as comedic or touching romantic episodes. It overlooked the type that is embodied by Pavlovich in "The Eternal Husband," characterized by a kind of innate impulse that leads to a permanent resignation, the most common form of which is blind devotion. Many literary figures were impressed by "The Eternal Husband." Among them were Henry Miller and André Gide: "...it is the work of Dostoevsky that I prefer most, out of all the others," Henry Miller would write. Meanwhile, André Gide dedicates an entire lecture to this work at the amphitheater where he taught literature.
