Description

A large tribute to the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s & 1940s, attempted for the first time in Greece, bearing the quality mark of Sonik! We could also call it the "swing issue," because in those distant times, it united the most diverse friends of music, leaving an indelible mark not only on the entertainment of the interwar period but also on the memory of those to come.

Modern Athens, living in its own "swing fever," is the best proof of this. Here, however, you will find the largest section of the musical life of Europe, America, and Greece from the 1910s—just before the first great War ended the carefree spirit of the belle époque—until the late 1940s, when World War II left the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers.

Among other things:

  • the entire Jazz Age, from Louis Armstrong and the "fever" of swing to the bebop of Charlie Parker
  • the blues of Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, and many other greats of the genre
  • our own rebetiko, from the Smyrna tunes of Rosa Eskenazy to the rise of Vasilis Tsitsanis
  • the first soundtracks
  • the exploration of the "grandfather" of rock `n` roll in the first two generations of country music
  • the "Lady Gaga of the Interwar" Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, and Attik with Sofia Vembo, along with all those who starred in the dawn of pop music in the United States, France, Germany, and Greece (light music)
  • the adventurous passage of classical music from Romanticism to the modern world, with references to our own composers

All of this presented in the context of the era, with special, interspersed texts that illuminate both the social developments of the times and the technological advances that allowed, for example, the existence of recording, radio, and talking cinema.
