Once, when I was six years old, I saw in a book about pristine forests, titled "True Stories," a wonderful drawing. It showed a boa swallowing a wild animal. Here is the copy of the drawing. The book said: "Boas swallow their prey whole, without chewing. Then they can't move and sleep for six months, just to digest." So I sat down and thought about the adventures of the jungle, and then I managed to draw, with a colored pencil, my first picture. Picture number 1. It looked like this: I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups and asked if my drawing frightened them. They answered: "Why should a hat scare us?" My drawing did not look like a hat. It looked like a boa swallowing an elephant. So I drew the inside of a boa, so that adults could understand. Explanations are always needed. My picture number 2 was like this: The grown-ups advised me to give up my drawings of boas, whether from the inside or outside, and to focus better on geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar.
