The year 1958 was a pivotal point in the post-war and post-civil war history of modern Greece. Just 9 years after the end of the Civil War, the country was trying to heal the wounds of the Occupation and the Civil War. Greek society was taking its first -unstable- steps in the post-war world, which was trapped in the Cold War and living with the anxiety of nuclear threat.
A clear discourse and political, economic, and social demands were trying to articulate, even spasmodically, within the framework of a tightly controlled "parliamentary democracy" under the guardianship of the US and NATO and expressed by the urban state and the Palace.
Under these conditions, the result of the 1958 elections was a political "earthquake" that fundamentally shook the domestic political system. Eugenia Kavallari in her book "The Historic Elections of 1958 & Imathia" by Historical Quest Publications uses the example of this prefecture to draw a series of useful and timely conclusions about the not-so-distant period. Newspaper articles, documents from state agencies, political parties, and trade unions, letters, a scholarly bibliography, and significant photographic material shed light on aspects of the issue in a revealing way.
The electoral battle was fierce and the election result in the same direction as the nationwide one. The prefecture of Imathia was not left out of these processes. However, the particular characteristic was that for the first time the Left (which was then expressed "legally" by the EDA) elected a member of parliament in the prefecture. Something that was repeated only in 1996 with the election of a member of parliament from the space of the KKE.
But these elections awakened the political establishment, which acted systematically and immediately in the following period. Nine years later, after the anomaly of the Apostasy and a series of other manipulations, it responded in the harshest way: by imposing the brutal military dictatorship of April 1967.
