The work deals with the struggle of the strong, honest bourgeoisie against capitalism. Capitalism projects a definitive lie. A public bathhouse not only offers no treatment but is also perfectly harmful.
Yet the institution brings in a lot of profit for the city. If anyone reveals its true, unhealthy condition, it will throw many people into poverty. However, the truth must be told, and here lies the conflict.
Can Dr. Stockmann stay silent? No, he must speak. But can he expect victory? No, it is impossible. Thus, hope, uncertain and vague, is postponed to the distant future when humanity achieves its evolution.
Of course, Stockmann is not an enemy of the people. The title is ironic. As a lover of truth, he struggles to crush a harmful lie. But the people do not like such loves.
