The young Prince of Denmark, Hamlet, unexpectedly loses his father, the King of Denmark. Hamlet's uncle, Claudius, marries the widow of his brother, Gertrude, and ascends to the throne. Hamlet is dissatisfied with his uncle's rise to the throne, as well as with his mother's hasty marriage.

One night, a ghost resembling the deceased King Hamlet appears to the night watchmen of Elsinore Castle, unable to convey the message it has. The guards inform Hamlet, and the next day when the ghost appears, it reveals that Hamlet's father was murdered by Hamlet's uncle, Claudius, and commands him to take revenge.

Hamlet plans to reveal Claudius's guilt and take revenge for his father's death by pretending to be mad. Even today, Hamlet is the most discussed of all Shakespearean heroes, as his psychology and motivations for avenging his father's death remain a mystery.

Many believe that Hamlet seeks the truth so he can surely fulfill the revenge demanded by the ghost—his father's spirit. Others, however, think that he procrastinates and is reluctant and weak to carry out his plan. His moral dilemma is enormous. His hesitation will prove fatal.

The tragedy experienced by the hero is that of a thinking man, who confronts and stands "against" the common crime, with a criminal authority and its servants, with a fraud. Shakespeare's work remains more relevant than ever after so many years.
