Alright. The Red and its stories may be all about haste and speed, but they too need to follow their own order. As we said, Alaric burned Rome in 410 AD, on the night of August 24th. The city burned for three days. And three nights. But which Rome is this story talking about? For Alaric and for all the Goths, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Burgundians, Alemanni, and many others, Rome was the world of their dreams. The True World, the Civilized one. The Empire of God – and the Goths were people of God too, children of the same Christian God. Barbarians, of course, but not exactly enemies. The Goths did not want to fight the empire. They wanted to enter it and live there too. They did not want to defeat its emperors (who were already two!). They wanted to serve them, to work for them and prosper. To become barbarians on a salary.
