Welcome to the edition of a unique photographic-historical album titled “The Bicycle in Greece, 1880-2012” (384 pages, author-editor Kyriakos Iosifidis, team Urbanact-Bikeart.gr, published by Kerkyra - Economia group).
The album is the result of a long-term research effort in cities across Greece aimed at preserving the history of the bicycle in our country, the memories of the people associated with it, and the efforts of citizens today, who promote it for a more beautiful and vibrant city for a more balanced life with exercise, recreation, and physical and mental health.
The research involved private and public records, on-site documentation in cities throughout Greece with interviews from people who have a history in the field and athletes who have achieved real feats, the rescue of historical photographic material, the detection of local press for articles and listings related to bicycles, among others.
The material is presented by city and region and through the following “channels”: the history of cycling clubs and renowned athletes, the history of shops and businesses (second and third generation that still operate), the folklore of the bicycle through citizens' memories, and the contemporary movement actions of citizens.
Additionally, the album includes texts by Thanos Vlastos from the National Technical University of Athens, Christina Koulouri from Panteion University, Apostolos Paraskevopoulos from Aristotle University, director Alkis Zervos, disabled cyclist Odysseas Papadopoulos, Spiros Papageorgiou from the magazine Mbike, among others.
