What we call 'active' folic acid, that is, methylfolate. Unfortunately, it is rare in the Greek market and completely absent from all multivitamins, which all contain plain folic acid. The issue with folic acid is that many of us have difficulty metabolizing it due to a mutation in a specific gene. By taking plain folic acid, we do not correct the deficiency we may have and end up with an unnecessary excess of unmetabolized folic acid circulating in our veins - something that is also not good.

The solution is this here. It is ready methylfolate, as our body would metabolize it. It may cause some overstimulation or agitation in high doses, but if you need it, you will immediately see its benefits. With methylfolate and B12 (it is good to take them together), a process is activated that produces our neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, etc.), so we may see improvements in mood. A well-known antidepressant treatment (I think it's called Deplin) is nothing more than plain methylfolate.

The price is what it is, neither perfect nor prohibitive. Metafolin (due to patenting by the company) is generally expensive. I have not seen methylfolate available in a non-patented, generic form (whether it's Metafolin or another company's) so for now, we don't have many options.
