Poverty is pure but bitter, courage is always burdensome, loneliness is very tiring, and life is very, very short. And I put an end to all that; only those who have money live well!
In 1728, two hundred years before Bertolt Brecht gave it its current form, John Gay wrote The Beggar's Opera, which even had a historical background: in the 18th century there was indeed a well-organized gang in London, led by Jonathan Wild. This gang was innovative in robbing and selling the stolen goods back to the victims at a higher price, while maintaining close ties with the police who took a cut.
John Gay based his work on this story to satirize the then infamous Prime Minister Walpole, distributing his characteristics among the two central characters of the opera, Peachum and Macheath.
The idea for a modern production of The Threepenny Opera belongs to Brecht's collaborator, Elisabeth Hauptmann, who learned in 1926 from newspapers about the great theatrical success of The Beggar's Opera, which was being performed in London. Hauptmann translated the work, and Brecht worked with her on the adaptation based on her translation.
He made profound cuts to the original material while experimenting with the new text he was creating, applying his still new idea of Epic Theatre. The premiere took place on August 31, 1928, and is considered one of the greatest successes in the history of theater. At various times, it has been described as: opera, operetta, musical, satire, political cabaret, and many other labels. Brecht himself described it as "the most successful presentation of Epic Theatre."
