Description

The easternmost mountain of northern Peloponnese and the second highest in the Morea, Ziria is a sweet and fertile place. Large plateaus and valleys diversify the mountainous landscape, while two large basins, those of Feneos and Stymphalia, where the lake of the same name nests, spread around the mountain.

The new map of the Ascend, at a scale of 1:30,000 and double-sided, covers the wider area around the mountain, starting from the sea, Akrota, up to Kamari, and extending south to Lavka and Psari. The variety and beauty of the landscapes are unique, as nature coexists with myth and history.

The journey into myth begins from the depths of the earth, from the cave of Hermes, and the gorge of Fonissa, with its cavernous gaps, and emerges in the beautiful valley of Flabourista, the Dasiou Lake, and Stymphalia Lake. The journey through history passes through the acropolis of Pellini, where the ancient temple was transformed into a paleo-Christian church and later into a cemetery.

It also passes through the Mycenaean cemetery of Aidoonion (the necropolis of the Homeric Araiethyrea), from which the famous jewels were stolen and ultimately repatriated as the "Treasure of Aidoonion," currently displayed at the museum of Nemea. And from Feneos, the ancient city-state of ancient Arcadia (which today administratively belongs to the Corinthia region), one of the largest and most important cities of Arcadia, thanks to its rich plain.

One can reflect on the interdependence of man and nature by visiting the Stymphalia Environmental Museum, one of the museums of P.I.O.P., or the well-kept villages of Trikala, and in Goura, with its historic buildings and cobblestone square. Above all, however, it is a genuine hiking map that suggests nature tours through 10 interesting marked routes with detailed information on distances and travel times.
