Thus, Ulyanov family members acquired noble titles, but they achieved this through civic virtues: diligent education, hard work, focused career development, and faith in usefulness. One could easily consider the Ulyanovs as a success story, a Russian version of the proverbial "From the hut to the palace." However, it was precisely their dedication to education and social progress that exposed the family to a typical danger of Tsarist society. The Tsarist state desperately needed these serious, introspective, socially ascending professionals, but at the same time, it feared them. They disrupted the traditional orderly organization of society based on ranks and soslovie (legally defined social class for peasants, merchants, townspeople, and nobles). They carried the insidious virus of troublesome comparison with Western Europe. They demanded a freedom of action that the authoritarian system could not grant them.
