Description

The Mares Smart Apnea represents the evolution of wrist computers for freediving and spearfishing. Based on the highly successful design of the Mares Smart, the Apnea comes with specialized software exclusively for apnea enthusiasts. It combines a top digital processor, ergonomic design, and high-tech materials, offering absolute accuracy and safety in every second of your dive.

Ergonomic Design and High-Contrast Display

The Mares Smart Apnea stands out for its exceptionally elegant and compact design, allowing its use both as a diving tool and as a sports watch for everyday wear. It features a high-contrast LCD display with improved viewing angles, ensuring that all indications are immediately readable underwater. The crystal is reinforced for scratch protection, while the bi-material strap offers top comfort and stability on the wrist.

Specialized Real-Time Apnea Functions

Designed exclusively for freedivers, the Smart Apnea provides immediate information on all critical diving parameters. During the dive, it displays in real time the current depth, dive time, descent and ascent speed, as well as the water temperature. The sampling rate is extremely fast (every 1 second), ensuring that no data is lost during apnea.

Absolute Safety with Surface Time Control

The diver's safety is paramount in free diving, and the Mares Smart Apnea features a special menu to avoid Taravana syndrome. As soon as you return to the surface, the computer automatically activates the Surface Time mode, accurately showing how long you have rested. At the same time, it incorporates customizable audio and visual alerts for maximum depth, dive time, and recovery intervals.

Advanced Logbook and Software Upgrade Capability

With an exceptionally rich built-in dive logbook, the device allows the storage and detailed display of statistics for each freediving session. Thanks to the ability to connect to a PC or Mac (via an optional interface), you can transfer your data and view your dive profiles in graphs. Additionally, the firmware upgradable software ensures that your watch will always stay updated with the latest Mares features.

Unfortunately, after 1.5 years it stopped counting and only shows the time. They asked me for 80 to 100 euros to send it to Italy for repair. I refused because I believe it's not worth it and I will only have it to see the time.

I give it 3 stars because I believe it is expensive for the quality it provides... I have had it since 2015 and this year it started acting up... Initially, within the first 6 months, the speaker broke and the reminders stopped working... Then the light started malfunctioning, and this year the indications started failing as well... Even the dealership couldn't fix it... I had to send it to Italy at my own expense... A time-consuming and not at all economical process... So, I bought a Suunto D4f

I have had it for two and a half years with over 200 dives, very satisfied, the battery change was done at the 2-year mark. My fishing goes up to 15 meters with several dives each time.

Amateur use for free diving up to 15m. Excellent, user-friendly, with very good automatic operation and above average build quality.

Tested in over 40 dives. So far it works flawlessly.
Update 13/3/2018: With over 600 dives, it hasn’t missed a beat, with the same battery. With all its functions set to automatic, it accompanies you ideally in freediving and spearfishing.
Update 3/3/2019: 1100+ dives. Works flawlessly, without a battery change. You don’t need to press any button before starting a dive. And after you get out of the water, it returns on its own to the time display after about half an hour. In short, if you have no reason to, and you only want it to follow you on dives, literally you don’t need to press any button after the initial setup.
Update April 2019: While I was on a dive, the screen went off, but I didn’t see any warning beforehand. Half an hour after getting out of the water, it reactivated by itself without me doing anything and showed a low battery indication. I sent it to the dealer for battery replacement, O-ring replacement, and a watertightness test. In two days it was returned to me like new.
Update August 2020: Since the last update there have been at least another 1000+ dives. Fully reliable, zero problems.
Update December 2021: Battery replacement and inspection at the dealer again. All good. I should only say that for years now, I don’t touch any buttons at all and I use it only for freediving. Literally I don’t touch any button. With the first dive it enters freediving mode and measures dive, ascent, and surface times by itself. I don’t use any other function of it and I have disabled all sounds.
Update July 2022: +500 dives, no problem.
Update September 2023: Service at the dealer, +700 dives, no problem.
October 2025. Battery replacement by myself and everything flawless
    July 2026 no problem
