Description

The Jews of Thessaloniki is a concise and illustrated presentation of the historical trajectory and presence of Judaism in Thessaloniki. The Jews of Thessaloniki, with fluctuations of prosperity and decline over time, harmoniously coexisted with the other two large ethnic groups in the city (Turks and Greeks) for five centuries, up to the mid-20th century, giving a cultural and linguistic tone to the multicultural society of the city.

This book takes a stroll through the historical milestones of the city's Jews and the Sephardic tradition, Jewish events, language and music, major personalities, social and economic infrastructure, traditional costumes and flavors, synagogues, schools, and their homes.

It records the establishment, flourishing, and the end, with the Nazi Holocaust, of a people who contributed to the development and unique character of the multicultural city. It is a historical and touristic guide, with rich photographic material and maps, that guides us through the Jewish Museum and the places of the social, economic, and cultural life of the Thessaloniki Jews, as well as the spaces of their memory and martyrdom.

An unyielding "guide" that refuses to forget, walks alongside Emotion, and honors Collective Memory.

Christos Zafeiris is a journalist and author of twelve historical research books about Thessaloniki, regional Hellenism, and Greek places. He was born in Kraniá Elassonas in 1945 and holds a degree from the Department of Archaeology and History of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has worked in Radio, Television, and the Press as an editor and executive officer. He has particularly focused on documentaries, as a researcher and screenwriter, on topics related to Thessaloniki and the broader Greek world. His latest book is Thessaloniki, the presence of the absent. The heritage of Romans, Muslims, Jews, Dönme, Franks, Armenians, and Slavs (2014).
