Astrology emerged during the birth of Stoicism, and this poisonous plant sprouted from the same Greek soil from which all sciences and arts originated. Its sources are Greek, and when the original Greek texts are unavailable, they are Latin. The darkness of oblivion into which dead astrology fell was so great that in the 19th century, even though almost the entire treasure of Greek and Roman literature was revived, its own texts did not come to light. Only recently has it sparked renewed interest among philologists, thanks to Greek papyri of astrological content found in Egypt.
The work of Zelinski is being translated and presented to the Greek reading public for the first time. Through its pages, Zelinski shows us the revival of these beliefs in the fertile ground of human insecurity and in the intense desire of humans to know and define their future.
Thaddeus Zelinski (1859-1944), a famous Russian and Polish scientist, was one of the most significant classical philologists in Europe, an honorary professor at various universities and academies, a professor at the University of Saint Petersburg (1887-1920) and Warsaw (1921-1935), and the author of hundreds of works on the literature, culture, and religion of Ancient Greece and Rome.
