The book describes the story of Vassilis Chlorokostas, a military doctor and proponent of the establishment of the Military Medical School in Athens (M.M.S., 1926).
At the age of eleven, starting from his village, Saint Demetrius in then-Ottoman Macedonia, he secretly crossed the border into free Greece, with a dream in mind: to become an officer and fight for the liberation of Macedonia.
After finishing school in 1915, during the national division, he returned to his village in the now-liberated Macedonia, only to find himself once again cut off on the other side of the border, due to the division of Greece into the "state of Athens" and "that of Thessaloniki."
When he returned to Athens, he enrolled in the Medical School of the University. Later, he was drafted, sent to the Balkan Front, and managed, after passing through difficult examinations, to be included in the student mission to the Military Medical School of Lyon in October 1919.
