Description

The entire period from 1941 to the summer of 1944 was for Thesprotia a "dismantling" of the Roman identity.

The Greek (occupational) administration in the region collapsed. In its place, an informal yet substantial Albanian administration operated with political, police, and military bodies. This administration had a national-socialist political signature and was functioning not merely objectively but programmatically alongside the German occupation forces.

Its record includes the expulsion of a large part of the Christian population from the area through the systematic use of armed violence. However, as happened with all minorities that bet on the Axis's card to realize their political plans, the countdown began the moment the political-military framework from which they drew their power collapsed.

However, in the case of the Muslim Chams of Thesprotia, there is a peculiarity: it is not the Red Army that dismantles the pro-Nazi administration, but the forces of Zerva as part of the Allied armed forces. This peculiarity will have consequences due to the Greek Civil War. Zerva's actions, including those against the armed Chams, needed to be characterized within the narrative of the Left with a similar political label.

The Cham party in neighboring Albania essentially repeats a narrative that has its roots in the communication interests of the Greek Civil War. Those who accept that history is "constructed" socially should be ready to welcome other, more radical "constructions" from the communist ruins of the Balkans. The times favor this. What one cannot know is for how much longer.
